MBI Wants Review On Ruling Restricting Skyscrapers In Ipoh
The Ipoh City Council (MBI) is seriously working towards getting the Department of Civil (DCA) Aviation to review a ruling restricting high- rise buildings from being built in the city.
Ipoh Mayor Datuk Roshidi Hashim said the ruling needs to be reviewed so that skyscrapers up to 40-storeys high can be constructed in Ipoh.
Tall buildings reflect a city’s progress and portrays metropolitan image, he added.
Roshidi said the move is in-line with the state government’s vision in seeing the city’s skyline change as well as to meet requests from developers who have been hindered from building tall structures by the ruling.
“Currently, the highest building we have in Ipoh is Tower Regency Hotel and Kinta Heights flats. This is because the DCA ruling only allows Ipoh to have a maximum of between 16 and 18-storeys or not more than 350 feet above sea-level.
“However, the DCA restriction only applies within 5km radius of the Sultan Azlan Shah airport whereas in the other parts of city, high rise buildings are still allowed based on merits,” he told reporters after chairing a council full-board meeting in Ipoh, today.
Roshidi said among the areas where high rise buildings are allowed are Meru Raya, Jelapang, Chemor, Tanjung Rambutan and Simpang Pulai.
He said the restriction had previously hindered development and many proposals by developers wanting to build skyscrapers, have been rejected.
The latest skyscraper proposal by a developer in the city is to build a 20-storey 4-star hotel at Jalan Sultan Idris Shah opposite Sam Tet school.
“We didn’t turn down the developer’s proposal because we do not want to hinder the growth of the city.
“Instead, we have told them to reduce it to 16-storey but hopefully the developer will be able to proceed with the original plan if we are able to get the DCA to review the ruling by then,” he said.

I wouldn’t want ipoh to turn into another KL.
If you really think that a progress of a City is based on Skyscrapers rather than the progress and welfare of the people. – Then look at Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Hollywood. – Cause that’s progress and the main centre of Films Art Movies. Venice doesn’t have Skyscrapers, Neither does Milan or the entire town or area of London. It’s not congested. – Go build your skyscrapers somewhere else.
As for now? Be innovative and figure out more contemporary designs to suit your needs/image for progress. You have an entire country of supposedly creative architects. – Figure something out.
Do you really think the people of the world think the twin towers is cool? You go up there, look down, and you see the most hideous of views.
So think again about the skyscrapers cause i have a feeling, it’s just a waste of more money and is definitely not a way forward. – Cause when you start to cover up the Hills of Ipoh and when you can’t see them anymore? – Then Ipoh has and will loose its charm.
