IPOH: A lorry driver was sentenced to death by the High Court here for murdering his brother-in-law two years ago.

S. Siva Kalisvaran, 27, from Taman Sentosa in Menglembu here, looked calm and hugged a female relative after Judicial Commissioner Teo Say Eng delivered the verdict yesterday.

Siva Kalisvaran, also known as “Panggilan Boy”, was found guilty of murdering S. Ganesan, 33, between 12.30am and 1.10am on Dec 29, 2009, in Medan Lahat, Ipoh after a family quarrel.

Teo, in his judgment, said the prosecution had succeeded in proving the case beyond reasonable doubt.

“I found the accused’s defence full of contradictions. I, therefore, find the accused guilty as charged and sentence him to death,” he said.

In mitigation earlier, Sarjit Kaur, representing defence counsel Datuk Naran Singh, pleaded for leniency as Siva Kalisvaran had no previous criminal record and had a wife and child to support.

According to the facts of the case, Ganesan had gone to his father-in-law’s house on the night of the incident before a heated argument broke out.

He hit his father-in-law with a helmet and a scuffle ensued with Siva Kalisvaran. Ganesan was later found in a pool of blood at the house porch with a slash wound on his neck.
