Nestled in the curve of Kinta Valley is Ipoh’s best kept secret. The Roots, a relaxing getaway, built with the mighty Kinta River flowing through it, is the newest addition to the ecological tourism scene, combining high octane adventure sport with sustainable living.
“Being dedicated conservationists, The Roots has developed this resort to have minimal impact on the surrounding environment,” says Anne, marketing director. “You can come for an overnight getaway, or for just an afternoon or evening activity, meal and or drinks.”
If you are inclined towards sport, rent an all terrain vehicle and plough through the jungle trail. The curving dirt track takes you past Orang Asli settlements, where you will be able to experience, first-hand, a simpler and more rustic way of life.
If riding full speed on a four-wheeled beast is not your thing, then why not opt for a bike ride or hike up the mountain where you will pass horses at the nearby Stud farm. Watching these magnificent equines, homed just next door to the resort, will definitely ease the daily stresses and strains of city life.
Water babies with a penchant for an adrenalin rush can get wet and wild on a tubing adventure. Organised seasonally by resort hosts, tubing involves being driven halfway up the mountain and using just a tractor tube, you float down the river. This brings you up close and personal to the flora and fauna of the area.
For more conventional sporty pursuits, the full-size outdoor court is perfect for badminton, volleyball , basketball and sepak takraw games. The Roots also boasts of its 30meter swimming pool that overlooks the flowing river. Kids have a great time playing water volleyball and swinging on the dozen hammocks hung all around the resort. A fun sand pit is also available for kids to get messy in.
If adventure doesn’t float your boat then worry not. An epicurean weekend getaway, complete with the chance for you to pick freshly laid eggs from our free range farm and the various fruits that grow in abundance all around the resort.
Bambusa Restaurant & Bar at the Roots, is opened daily for lunch and dinner. It has become a popular venue for Private functions and poolside parties as the ambience at dusk is breathtaking. The many gazebos, dotted along the river are enticing during the day as they are at night-time. Night owls need not worry, as Bambusa serves many a variety of German beers and light snacks.
Sit by a bonfire, cradle your drink in your hand and give in to total relaxation. Or dip your feet in the river while sitting atop a rock. With the abundance of wildlife, right at your doorstep, you may even get the chance to spot a river otter. But keep your eyes wide open as they are elusive as they are cunning.
When it comes to accommodation, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Roots features four tree-top suites, made entirely out of bamboo. A post-modern version of a ‘kampung’ house, the suites come complete with hot water and air conditioning. For an added touch of indulgence, some chalets feature a Jacuzzi on a river-facing balcony.
For larger family groups or those who just prefer a bit more space, the River Villa has two large bedrooms, each with one king size four poster bed and two singles. The bathroom experience can be one of our highlights if you would like to take a hot shower in the jungle! (Villas with modern indoor showers are available as well.)
If you’re in search of a getaway with a difference, then The Roots, surrounded by lush jungle and the relaxing sounds of nature, could be just the ticket. Explore, Indulge. Refresh. Revive. It’s all here.
